How it works

The Sahara desert trip is a 5 days tour that starts and ends in Marrakesh. We’re trekking for 3 days off-the beaten path through the Sahara and wild camp in the desert under the stars. The trip is led by an experienced local guide and includes everything needed: e.g. local transportation (Marrakesh – M’hamid El Ghezlane – Marrakesh), accommodation (wild camping), meals (+ a cook), as well as special equipment (camping equipment & camels) during the trip.

You will be picked up at your hotel in Marrakesh between 6.45am -7.15am, meet your team members and drive to the Erg Chigaga dunes (8-10 hours ride). Along the way you’ll pass by several Berber villages and drive the final 3 hours of the journey ‘off-road’ through the desert. Overnight we’re at a fixed Berber camp at the base of the dunes. Sunset from the tallest dune in the entire Erg.

After breakfast you’ll start the hike to the dunes of Erg Sedrar (approx. 6 hours). Cross dry river beds, and walk through a variety of desert vegetation and scrub before the terrain opens out and becomes more stark. As the day’s trek draws to a close, expect to wild camp amidst gently rolling dunes and Tamarisk trees, which offer shelter and where you’ll enjoy freshly prepared local food.

Today you’ll hike to the dunes of Erg Zahar and you’ll cross the Draa riverbed, called the ‘Remote Dunes’ (approx. 6 hours). Progressing into the Sahara desert, reach ever-more remote terrain, and larger sand dunes surrounded by broad, dry earth plateaux and desert hamada (black stone). Scramble over the dunes and you’ll be able to see incredible views of the wild desert. The camp will be set in the late afternoon where you’ll enjoy a great dinner and the company of your team & the locals.

As the sand becomes deeper (in former water courses/dried rivers), the surrounding plateaux opens up to different kinds of plants and tree-life, and you will trek near an area that offers grazing land for the elusive Dorcas gazelle. You’ll hike north across the Draa riverbed to the region of Lbor west of Mhamid (approx. 5-6 hours). You’ll finish the day with a spectacular sunset in the desert – and setting up the last camp west of Mhamid.

The time in the desert comes to an end and in the morning you’ll start you journey back to civilisation with an early morning 30 minutes 4×4 transfer to Mhamid (off-road), then join the tarmac road at Mhamid, north to Marrakech. On the way we’ll stop at the UNESCO Site Via Ait Ben Haddou for a quick visit. Expect to arrive back in Marrakesh around 6.00pm and enjoy the rest of your stay in Morocco.
